Sight Words are words that are recognized by sight rather than sounded out, in order to achieve reading fluency. They are the most frequently used words in the English language, and are often unable to be read phonetically (“was”, “are”, and “out” are examples).  Bob Books Sight Words feature the top Sight Words in two sets – one for kindergarten and one for first grade – in order to allow parents and children to read, learn, and practice easily and enjoyably.

Each Sight Words box includes 10 original books, 30 flashcards, and a parent guide.  Soon your child will be saying “I read the whole book!”®

Scholastic kindly sent a set of the new BOB books for Children-R-First to preview, and the newest member of our team, Heidi Starr, and her four year old daughter read them. Here is what Heidi had to say about BOB Books Sight Words for Kindergarten;

 “I was given the task of introducing myself and my four year child to the Bob Books Kindergarten Sight Words series.  Although my four year old daughter has limited letter sound comprehension, she was very enthusiastic to try out these books.  We read the first book and then read it again.  I intentionally left out certain words and let her fill in the blanks.  I was amazed by how much she remembered!  She was reading whole sentences, thanks in part to the illustrations!

The book series also comes with a set of sight word flash cards that go along with each book.  I then started showing my daughter the sight words first and letting her hunt through the books to find the words on the card.  She thought this was very fun!  Then when I read the books to her I would stop at each sight word to see if she recognized it.  She was amazed that she could read the words!

My daughter and I really enjoyed the time we spent together reading these books.  The illustrations, although plain and silly to me, really helped highlight the words and actions on each page.  I also liked the flexibility of either teaching my child the words through memorization or by sounding them out.  These books are great way to not only teach your child how to recognize words while reading to them, but give them the confidence to know they can READ!”
