Monster Letters

Whether your little learner is starting to identify their letters in preschool or starting to read in kindergarten, this activity combines letter identification with creativity and fun! Children need to first learn what the letters look like, but also match the corresponding sound to that letter. This is the first steps of “phonemic awareness” and is a building block for reading in the future.
What You Need:
- 26 unlined index cards
- Thick bold marker
- Various art supplies such as markers, colored pencils, crayons, or stickers
What You Do:
- Write one letter of the alphabet on each index card with the thick marker.
- Ask your child to create an alphabet monster or creature by adding eyes, a nose, a mouth, ears, fangs, etc. with the art supplies to the letter.
- Help your child give the creature a name that starts with the same letter. For example, for a T monster, he might name it "Thomas the Terrible". Write each monster's name on its card.
- You could even add stickers of items that belong with that letter on the index card. Scrapbooking stores and craft stores hold stickers of every variety and every child loves stickers. In addition, seeing items that begin with a particular letter grouped together helps the child match the sound with the letter.
