How to Make a Periscope

My 4-year old son came to me the other day and said "Mommy, I need some mirrors because I want to make a periscope!" Huh? I asked him where he learned about a periscope. "Curious George had one, and I want to make one to!" Wow....these are the days when I think maybe I'm not such a bad mommy for letting the tv babysit my kid while I make dinner or check my email. Thank goodness for PBS!
Of course, I had no idea how to make a periscope, so we Googled it. We found this great little "how-to" video. It looked easy enough, but I thought it would be a perfect activity for my engineer husband to do with our son, so I gathered the materials and let them have at it. Just a note: On the video they say you can find little mirrors at "most any store."  Uh, not quite. I searched at a few places until I found a pack of 5 at Michael's for $2.99. Our periscope turned out great! My son has abandoned all his Christmas toys to play with his new "spy toy."
