Boo Bingo by; Nicole Lumpkin
Halloween is fast approaching! The black-and-orange color theme is everywhere, from witches and ghosts to pumpkins and black cats. Here is a spooked-up version of bingo is a fun, interactive way to see just how many symbols are present throughout your day. Ghoul luck! This a great way to keep a preschooler/kindergartener busy during errands and enhance their matching skills. Plus, it is a fun game the family can play together!
What You Need:
- Several sheets of poster board or pieces of cardboard (a square, chessboard-sized piece works best, but any type of sheet 12” x 12” or larger will work)
- Thick black marker (such as a Sharpie)
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Halloween Stickers
- Markers
What You Do:
- At least a week before Halloween, you and your child can create a bingo board. Use a ruler to create a grid of squares on each piece of poster board or cardboard. This is a great opportunity for your child to practice her measuring skills. Create at least 25 squares (5 rows by 5 columns).
- Brainstorm the various words for the symbols and imagery associated with Halloween. Examples include: black cat, witch, broomstick, Frankenstein, Dracula, vampire, bat, spider, cobweb, cauldron, pumpkin, Jack O’Lantern, and the Grim Reaper.
- Place an image in the box accompanied by the associating word. You may use the same words twice in one board, but try to have a variety of different words on each board.
- You’re Ready to Play: When you and your child are out on errands, have the child look out for the symbols on his or her bingo board. When they find one of the symbols, they can mark it with a marker (Bingo Markers are available at most stores.)
- See how many symbols your child can find. Help them as they search stores, friends’ houses, and their neighborhood.
